Social Security beneficiaries could see a 3.8% cost-of-living adjustment in 2027, a projection that would mark the largest annual increase since the 8.7% boost of 2023, according to The Senior Citizens League. The forecast is based on the most recent inflation data and represents a full percentage point higher than the 2.8% COLA that took effect in January 2026.
The 3.8% projection would increase the average monthly benefit by approximately $73.62, raising payments from $1,937.53 to $2,011.15, according to TSCL’s analysis. The official Social Security COLA for 2027 will be announced in October 2026, when the Social Security Administration releases its calculation based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.

The COLA mechanism automatically adjusts Social Security benefits to help beneficiaries keep pace with inflation. Since 1975, the annual increase has been tied to the Consumer Price Index, ensuring that purchasing power does not erode as prices rise across the economy. The adjustment takes effect each January and applies to nearly 71 million Social Security beneficiaries.
AARP, another major retirement advocacy organization, projects a slightly lower 3.6% COLA for 2027 based on current inflation trends. Both estimates reflect recent cooling in inflation after the spike that drove the 2023 increase. However, even as inflation has moderated, beneficiary advocates argue that COLA adjustments still often lag behind the actual costs retirees face, particularly for healthcare, housing, and utilities.

The 2027 projection comes after a period of volatile COLA adjustments. The 2023 increase of 8.7% was the largest since 1981, driven by the highest inflation in decades. The COLA then declined to 3.2% in 2024 and 2.5% in 2025, before rising again to 2.8% for 2026. If the 3.8% forecast holds, it would represent a significant rebound from the modest increases of the past two years and would be the strongest adjustment since 2023.
Beneficiaries will receive the official confirmation of the 2027 COLA when the Social Security Administration makes its announcement in October 2026. The adjustment will be reflected in the benefit payments that retirees and other beneficiaries receive beginning in January 2027. For those living on fixed incomes, even modest increases in monthly payments can meaningfully affect their ability to cover rising expenses.
