Social Security payments projected to rise 3.8% in 2027

Social Security payments are projected to rise 3.8% in 2027, the largest annual increase since 2022, according to forecasts from The Senior Citizens League.

If the adjustment takes effect as projected, the average monthly benefit would increase by approximately $73.62, rising from $1,937.53 to $2,011.15, according to the nonprofit organization’s analysis.

The cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, is calculated based on inflation data from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for July, August, and September of the prior year. The Social Security Administration will announce the official 2027 COLA on October 14, 2026, after the Labor Department releases September inflation data.

The 3.8% projection represents a significant jump from 2026’s 2.8% increase, marking the strongest boost for beneficiaries in years. This follows a period of more modest adjustments: after the historic 8.7% COLA in 2023—the highest in four decades—adjustments dropped to 3.2% in 2024 and 2.5% in 2025.

The COLA mechanism ensures that Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits keep pace with inflation. When inflation rises, beneficiaries receive higher adjustments; when it cools, the increases shrink accordingly. The projections issued by The Senior Citizens League each month are based on the most recent Consumer Price Index data, wage trends, and unemployment figures.

How Rising Inflation Drives the 2027 Increase

The projected 3.8% COLA reflects elevated inflation in the first half of 2026. As of June, the CPI-W showed a 3.5% increase over the prior 12 months, according to Cleveland.com. This sustained price growth in categories ranging from groceries and clothing to airfare and housing costs directly translates into larger benefit adjustments under the COLA formula.

The three-month window of July, August, and September is critical because it determines the final official figure. Any inflation data released in the coming weeks could still shift the projection, though analysts expect the 3.8% estimate to remain close to the final number announced in October. Once confirmed, the new benefit amount will take effect with the first Social Security payments in January 2027, or December 31 for Supplemental Security Income recipients.

For millions of retirees and disabled workers who depend on Social Security as their primary income source, the projected increase addresses some of the erosion in purchasing power caused by rising costs. However, beneficiaries should note that higher Medicare premiums and other benefit program changes in 2027 may offset a portion of the COLA increase.

The latest 2027 COLA projection at 3.8% comes as lawmakers and advocacy groups continue to debate long-term Social Security solvency. The program’s trust fund is projected to exhaust its reserves in 2032 without legislative action, a concern that has prompted renewed discussion about potential benefit reforms and funding mechanisms.
