Social Security COLA forecast for 2027 ranges from 3.6% to 3.8%

Social Security recipients could see a 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) ranging from 3.6% to 3.8%, according to forecasts released this summer based on cooling inflation data. The Senior Citizens League projects 3.8%, while AARP estimates 3.6%, representing a significant increase from the 2.8% COLA that took effect in January 2026.

The updated forecasts reflect a substantial downward revision from earlier projections. In May 2026, some early estimates for the 2027 COLA ranged as high as 3.9% to 4.2%, but June’s inflation data prompted analysts to lower their expectations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index released in July showed inflation easing, which directly affects the COLA calculation.

For the average retiree, a 3.6% to 3.8% increase would translate to approximately $74 to $79 more per month in benefits, bringing the average monthly payment to roughly $2,000 or higher. The exact amount depends on each beneficiary’s current payment level and the final COLA figure announced in October.

How the COLA Is Calculated

The Social Security COLA is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which the Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks for the third quarter of each year—July, August, and September. The agency averages the CPI-W for these three months and compares it to the same quarter from the previous year; the percentage increase becomes the COLA.

This methodology means the 2027 COLA will be finalized only after September data is released. The Social Security Administration will announce the official 2027 COLA in October 2026, with the increase taking effect in January 2027 for the first time in beneficiaries’ checks.

The 2026 COLA of 2.8% followed a 2.5% increase in 2025 and a 3.2% adjustment in 2024. A 3.6% to 3.8% adjustment for 2027 would be higher than recent years but still below historical averages. From 1984 to 2006, COLAs averaged 3.02% annually, according to the Social Security Administration.

Multiple independent analysts track these forecasts throughout the year as new inflation data becomes available. Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security and Medicare analyst, forecasts the 2027 COLA at 3.7%, while The Senior Citizens League and AARP continue updating their projections monthly. The range of estimates reflects the uncertainty inherent in forecasting inflation months in advance.
