Social Security expands online tools for disability claims and appeals

The Social Security Administration announced major enhancements to its online services on July 21, 2026, expanding self-service options for individuals navigating disability claims and appeals through the mySocial Security portal.

The new tools allow individuals to submit three critical disability adjudication forms directly online: Form HA-4631 for recent medical treatment, Form HA-4632 for medication information, and Form HA-4633 for work background. Online submission ensures adjudicators receive information quickly and supports more efficient case processing, according to SSA Chief of Disability Adjudication Jay Ortis.

Individuals with a pending disability claim, appeal, or recently adjudicated claim can now track the status of their case online at the hearings and appeals levels. The Claim Status Tracker provides real-time updates, processing time estimates, and key milestones throughout each level of adjudication, including notifications when the hearing office receives a request for hearing and status updates as the case moves through review.

The expansion includes access to proffer letters—notices sent when new evidence is added to a case after a hearing—through the mySocial Security Message Center, allowing claimants to review and respond before a decision is made. Individuals can also view electronic copies of 26 hearing-related notices, including Notice of Hearing, Request for Good Cause for Late Filing, and Notice of Continued Hearing. Claimants may opt to receive email or text notifications when new documents are available, though paper notices will continue to be mailed.

The digital expansion comes as the SSA works to accelerate disability claim processing despite workforce constraints. According to the Congressional Research Service, total SSA staffing dropped 17.1 percent between January 2024 and January 2026, reaching its lowest level since 1967. Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano has emphasized that technology is helping the agency deliver more service with fewer employees.

The tools appear to be contributing to measurable improvements in processing speed. According to SSA’s performance data updated August 3, 2026, the agency is issuing initial disability claims decisions on average 37 days faster than in June 2025, with average processing time falling from 222 days to 185 days. The number of pending initial disability claims has also declined from approximately 957,000 in June 2025 to about 871,000 in June 2026.

SSA surpassed 100 million mySocial Security accounts earlier in 2026. The agency has been pursuing a broader digital-first transformation over the past year, achieving a 20 percent increase in online transactions in fiscal 2025 compared to 2024 and reducing the average speed of answer on the National 800 Number from 42 minutes in fiscal 2024 to 6.6 minutes, according to Commissioner Bisignano’s May 2026 progress report.
