Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) is set to report second quarter 2026 earnings after market close today at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time, with the stock riding momentum from a proposed U.S. ban on Chinese optical components for data centers.
The company guided for Q2 revenue between $180 million and $198 million when it reported first quarter results in May, representing a significant sequential increase from the $151.14 million it delivered in Q1. Analysts expect earnings of $0.03 per share for the quarter, according to Zacks.
AAOI stock surged 17% on August 4 after Reuters reported that the Federal Communications Commission is drafting a ban on imports of new Chinese optical transceivers for U.S. data centers. The proposed restriction, part of the Trump administration’s effort to reduce dependence on Chinese AI hardware, sent optical component stocks rallying across the board: Coherent gained 13%, Lumentum rose 11%, and Corning climbed 7%, according to reports from August 4.

Applied Optoelectronics makes optical transceivers and other components used in data centers and broadband networks. The company has positioned itself as a key beneficiary of AI infrastructure buildout, with data center revenue jumping 154% year-over-year to $81.4 million in Q1, according to earnings disclosures.
The proposed ban on Chinese optical imports would likely redirect orders to domestic suppliers like AAOI, which has been scaling production capacity. In its Q1 earnings call, management noted it was ramping 800G transceiver volumes and beginning production of 1.6 terabit transceivers, the next-generation components powering advanced AI systems.
A prior surge of 17.6% in AAOI stock ahead of August 6 earnings had already positioned the stock for momentum before the China ban report emerged. The stock has risen significantly year-to-date as AI data center demand accelerated globally.

AAOI will host a conference call and webcast for analysts and investors at 4:30 p.m. ET today to discuss the results and answer questions about the company’s outlook. Investors will be watching for any commentary on demand trends, production capacity, and how management views the potential impact of the proposed optical import restrictions.
