AAOI stock surges 17.6% ahead of August 6 earnings, projects return to profit

Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) stock surged 17.6% on August 4, 2026, as investors positioned ahead of the company’s August 6 earnings report, which is expected to show a swing to profitability driven by surging demand for AI data center components.

Wall Street consensus expects AAOI to report Q2 earnings per share of $0.02, a sharp turnaround from a loss of $0.07 in the first quarter, according to analyst forecasts. The company’s management guided for a Q2 EPS range of negative $0.03 to positive $0.03, with revenue projected between $180 million and $198 million.

The stock’s jump reflects investor optimism about AAOI’s position in the booming market for optical transceivers that power AI infrastructure. The company supplies 800G and 1.6T optical transceivers to hyperscale data center operators, components critical for the high-speed networking that underpins artificial intelligence systems. Q1 2026 revenue reached $151.1 million, up 51% year-over-year, driven largely by these optical products.

AAOI is expanding aggressively to meet demand. The company announced it will boost production capacity at its Pearland, Texas manufacturing campus to reach over 700,000 units of 800G and 1.6T transceivers per month by the end of 2027, with more than half of that output based in the United States. This represents a dramatic scale-up from the roughly 100,000 units per month the company was producing in the first quarter.

The production ramp is part of a broader shift in AAOI’s business. The company, which historically focused on cable television components, has pivoted to become a vertically integrated optical transceiver supplier. Management projects full-year 2026 revenue will exceed $1.1 billion, more than double the prior year’s $456 million.

Analyst Oakoff Investments rated AAOI a “Buy” ahead of the earnings call, citing expectations for strong guidance updates and continued production acceleration. The analyst noted that while the company missed earnings estimates in the first quarter, the longer-term trajectory remains compelling. For fiscal 2027, consensus estimates project revenue of $2.57 billion with earnings per share of $4.77, implying a price-to-earnings multiple of less than 20x on forward earnings.

The stock has pulled back significantly from its May highs of around $220 per share, trading near $110 ahead of the earnings announcement. Despite the recent weakness, AAOI remains up over 300% year-over-year, reflecting the strength of demand for the optical components that connect AI infrastructure.
