Stock market hits record highs on strong earnings from Palantir, Caterpillar

The stock market hit record highs on August 4 as strong earnings from Palantir and Caterpillar reassured investors that artificial intelligence-driven demand is sustaining growth across multiple sectors. The S&P 500 climbed to 7,644.56 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged to 53,825.50 intraday, both marking fresh all-time peaks, according to Reuters reporting from the market close.

Palantir Technologies surged 17.4% after reporting second-quarter revenue of $1.94 billion, a 93% increase year-over-year that crushed Wall Street expectations. The software and data analytics company raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to between $8.15 billion and $8.16 billion, up from its previous forecast of $7.65 billion, signaling confidence in sustained demand for its AI-powered platforms.

Caterpillar, viewed as a bellwether for the global industrial economy, jumped 12% after reporting record second-quarter sales of $20.54 billion, a 24% increase from the prior year. The company’s adjusted earnings per share of $8.17 beat analyst expectations of $6.20 by a wide margin, and it raised its annual revenue growth forecast. Construction segment revenue grew 35% in the quarter, driven partly by a 50% surge in North America, where demand for equipment supporting AI data center buildouts has surged.

Both earnings reports point to a common theme: the infrastructure buildout for artificial intelligence is generating tangible, sustained demand. Caterpillar’s power and energy segment, which supplies backup power equipment for data centers, posted 17% revenue growth in the quarter. The company also reported a record order backlog of $72.1 billion, suggesting visibility into future revenue streams.

The earnings results came at a critical moment for market sentiment. Investors have been scrutinizing AI-related earnings this season to determine whether the billions of dollars invested in AI infrastructure and software are translating into real returns. Eric Parnell, chief market strategist at Great Valley Advisor Group, noted the stakes: “The AI earnings performance has been fantastic, but the big question that investors are asking themselves now is that if it’s going to be sustainable. And if it’s sustainable, we’re going to have to start to separate the winners from the losers.”

The broader earnings season has exceeded historical benchmarks. As of early August, 85.2% of the 304 companies in the S&P 500 that had reported second-quarter results had beaten estimates, compared to a long-term average of 67.5%. Strong results from AI leaders Microsoft and Amazon the previous week had already lifted sentiment, but the Palantir and Caterpillar reports provided fresh evidence that AI-driven demand extends beyond software and semiconductors into industrial equipment and infrastructure.

On the broader market, chip stocks surged, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index up around 4%. Photonic firms Coherent and Lumentum added 14% and 7.8%, respectively, after Reuters reported the Trump administration is drafting a ban on U.S. imports of new Chinese data center components, a move that could further boost domestic equipment demand.

The Nasdaq Composite gained 304.36 points, or 1.16%, while energy stocks lagged as crude prices fell over 2% on hopes for a diplomatic resolution to Middle East tensions. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.36-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and a 2.04-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq, signaling broad-based strength across the market.
