Social Security releases August payment schedule with early SSI delivery

Social Security released its August 2026 payment schedule earlier this month, with Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients receiving their August payment one day early on Friday, July 31, because August 1 falls on a Saturday, according to the Social Security Administration.

SSI payments are normally distributed on the first of each month. However, when that date lands on a weekend or federal holiday, the Social Security Administration moves the payment to the preceding business day to ensure timely delivery. August is the fourth month in 2026 when SSI recipients will not receive their payment on the standard first day of the month.

For traditional Social Security retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, the payment schedule depends on when recipients began collecting and their birth date. Those who started receiving benefits before May 1, 1997, received their August payment on Monday, August 3. For beneficiaries who began receiving benefits after May 1997, payments are distributed based on birth date: those born between the 1st and 10th receive payments on Wednesday, August 12 (the second Wednesday); those born between the 11th and 20th are paid on Wednesday, August 19 (the third Wednesday); and those born between the 21st and 31st receive payments on Wednesday, August 26 (the fourth Wednesday), according to the Social Security Administration.

Supplemental Security Income is a means-tested federal program that provides monthly cash assistance to individuals age 65 or older, blind individuals, or those with disabilities who meet strict income and asset requirements. In 2026, the maximum federal SSI benefit is $994 per month for an eligible individual and $1,491 per month for an eligible couple. Unlike traditional Social Security, which is based on work history, SSI eligibility depends entirely on financial need: recipients must generally have assets below $2,000.

The early payment does not represent an additional check or a change in benefit amount—it is simply an adjustment to the standard payment schedule to avoid weekend processing. Beneficiaries can verify their exact payment date by logging into their my Social Security account or by calling the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. Those who do not receive their payment on the scheduled date should allow three additional business days before contacting their bank or financial institution, as delays in posting can occur.
