United Airlines launched 12 new domestic routes from Chicago O’Hare in the third quarter of 2026, expanding service to western leisure destinations and regional markets despite ongoing FAA capacity restrictions at the airport. The new routes include daily flights to Santa Barbara and Eugene, Oregon, plus limited weekly service to Monterey, California, and St. George, Utah, according to InsideFlyer reporting.
The expansion comes as the FAA maintains a daily flight cap of 2,708 operations at O’Hare through October 2027, a roughly 10 percent reduction from the roughly 3,080 flights that had operated there previously. The restriction was initially set to expire in October 2026 but was extended in late July after United and other carriers had already adjusted their growth plans.

United’s strategic growth at O’Hare reflects the airline’s long-standing focus on the airport as a major hub. The carrier had announced plans to offer nonstop service to 222 destinations from O’Hare in 2026, more than any other airline there, according to a January statement from the airline.
The new routes operate under both United Express and mainline branding, with regional jets and Boeing 737s deployed based on demand and slot availability. SkyWest’s Bombardier CRJs and Embraers serve smaller markets like Kearney, Nebraska, and Cody, Wyoming, while Republic Airways’ Embraer E175s operate the Key West route.
The 12-route addition follows a setback in late July when United announced it was delaying 11 planned new routes from O’Hare. United cited the FAA’s extension of the flight cap through October 2027 as the reason for the postponement, saying the capacity limit left little room to add flying without pulling slots from existing schedules.

O’Hare’s current restrictions mark a return to a familiar pattern for the airport. The FAA imposed flight caps at O’Hare starting in 2004, when the airport was handling record traffic volumes. Those caps remained in place until 2008, when a new runway opened and the restrictions were lifted, allowing the airport to handle increased demand.
The FAA’s 2026 caps were announced in April in response to concerns about congestion and delays at the nation’s busiest airport by traffic volume. The agency cited the need to limit daily operations to 100 arrivals and 100 departures per hour to maintain safety and efficiency, according to the Federal Register.
