Social Security releases August 2026 payment schedule; SSI recipients got early payment

The Social Security Administration has released the August 2026 payment schedule, with Social Security beneficiaries receiving payments on four different dates based on their birth date, while Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients get their August payment one day early on Friday, July 31.

For traditional Social Security retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, the payment dates depend on when you were born. Those who started receiving benefits before May 1, 1997, get paid on Monday, August 3. For those who began benefits after May 1997, the schedule divides by birth date: beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th receive payments on Wednesday, August 12 (the second Wednesday); those born between the 11th and 20th are paid on Wednesday, August 19 (the third Wednesday); and those born between the 21st and 31st receive payments on Wednesday, August 26 (the fourth Wednesday), according to the Social Security Administration.

SSI recipients face an unusual situation this month. Normally, Supplemental Security Income payments are distributed on the first of each month, but because August 1 falls on a Saturday, the Social Security Administration moves the payment to the previous business day. This means SSI recipients will receive their August payment on Friday, July 31, not on the standard August 1 date. This is not an extra payment or a change in amount—it is simply an early delivery to avoid a weekend.

Supplemental Security Income is a means-tested program that provides monthly cash assistance to people age 65 or older, blind individuals, or those with disabilities who have limited income and resources. According to the Social Security Administration, the 2026 SSI federal benefit rate is $994 per month for an eligible individual and $1,491 per month for an eligible couple. Unlike traditional Social Security, which is based on work history, SSI eligibility depends entirely on financial need: recipients must generally have assets below $2,000.

The Social Security Administration staggers regular Social Security payments to manage the volume of transactions. Beneficiaries can check their exact payment date by logging into their my Social Security account or by calling the agency at 1-800-772-1213. Those who do not receive their payment on the scheduled date should contact their bank or financial institution first, as delays in posting can occur.
