Specialty insurance carrier Relm Insurance has appointed Timothy Powell as Head of Asia Pacific and Global Head of Underwriting Performance, marking the company’s first dedicated leadership presence in the region as it launches a planned expansion across the insurance market.
Powell, who brings more than 30 years of insurance industry experience, will be based in Sydney and lead Relm’s expansion across Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, with opportunities in New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and mainland China. The appointment signals Relm’s commitment to serving emerging industries in a region where traditional insurers have left significant gaps.
Powell joins Relm after holding senior underwriting leadership roles at global insurers Everest and Zurich, where he led Financial Lines and Cyber portfolios across multiple markets. Most recently, he served as International Head of Financial Lines at Everest Insurance, building and leading underwriting teams across international borders. His appointment came just days after he announced his relocation from London back to Australia, where he spent time earlier in his career building broker relationships.
Relm’s expansion strategy in Asia Pacific mirrors the company’s proven approach in other regions. The firm will focus on innovative industries and companies pushing forward in digital assets and web3, the space economy, fintech, the sharing economy, and alternative therapeutics. This focus on emerging sectors addresses what the company views as an underserved market in Asia Pacific, where traditional insurers have been slow to develop capacity for cutting-edge technology risks.
The appointment comes as Relm continues to strengthen its global leadership team. Earlier in 2026, the company announced three C-suite appointments, including Shane Doyle as Chief Underwriting Officer, based in the United Kingdom. Doyle praised Powell’s appointment, stating that Powell brings “deep underwriting expertise, strong relationships across the market, and a practical understanding of what it takes to build a business.” Powell will be tasked with ensuring Relm delivers above-market returns on equity while empowering underwriters to find solutions that few competitors can match.
Powell expressed confidence in the opportunity, noting that Relm has “established a clear value proposition supporting emerging industries and advanced technology risk.” He said he looks forward to reconnecting with brokers and clients across Australia and the wider region, positioning Relm as a specialist insurance provider for emerging markets in Asia Pacific.
