Super Micro Computer surges on record margins, $60B backlog

Super Micro Computer stock surged on July 21, 2026, as investors digested strong margin recovery and the company’s commanding position in the AI server market, where it commands a $39 billion order backlog and guides for roughly $60 billion in AI server revenue this fiscal year.

The server maker’s fiscal Q3 2026 results, reported in May, showcased a dramatic margin turnaround that reignited investor confidence. Gross margin expanded to 9.9%, up 360 basis points from 6.3% in the prior quarter—a recovery that Wall Street had been watching closely as a signal of the company’s ability to scale production while controlling costs.

That margin improvement was driven by better product mix, inventory management, and reduced tariff impacts, according to CFO David Weigand on the earnings call. The company guided for Q4 gross margins of 8.2% to 8.4%, still well above the lows the company had experienced earlier in the year.

The backlog figures underscore Super Micro’s dominance in AI infrastructure. The $39 billion AI server order backlog represents the strongest demand signal in the company’s history, reflecting customer commitments to deploy Nvidia-based systems at scale. Management’s guidance for $60 billion in AI server revenue for the full fiscal year—a 144% year-over-year increase—signals that the company expects to work through this backlog aggressively.

Super Micro also raised its full-year fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to $38.9 billion to $40.4 billion from a prior $36 billion target, reflecting the surge in AI demand. The company’s Data Center Building Block Solutions (DCBBS) business, which bundles servers, software, and services, is expected to contribute more than 25% of total profit in coming years as the company shifts toward higher-margin integrated solutions.

The stock’s surge on July 21 came despite earlier headwinds. In June, the company announced a $7 billion financing package—including common stock and mandatory convertible offerings—to fund capacity expansion and working capital for the AI boom. The equity raise initially weighed on the stock but analysts have since argued the company is securing resources to capitalize on an unprecedented opportunity.
