Alexandr Wang joined Meta in June 2025 as part of the company’s roughly $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI and is named to help lead the newly created Meta Superintelligence Labs, according to company announcements and reporting.
Meta’s investment—reported by TechCrunch as valuing Scale at about $29 billion—was described as a strategic partnership in which Wang would leave day-to-day leadership at Scale and move to Meta to work on its superintelligence efforts.

Mark Zuckerberg announced the formation of Meta Superintelligence Labs in an internal memo published by CNBC/NBC, and that memo says “Alexandr Wang has joined Meta to serve as our Chief AI Officer and lead MSL,” naming Nat Friedman as a co-lead on products and applied research.
Reporting in Fortune and TechCrunch provided additional context on the June 2025 deal: the package was widely described as Meta buying a 49% stake in Scale AI for about $14.3 billion and recruiting Wang and other senior hires to accelerate Meta’s frontier-model work.

Scale AI confirmed the investment and said Wang would step down as CEO and remain on the company’s board, while Jason Droege would become interim CEO, TechCrunch reported.
Fortune traced the negotiations between Wang and Zuckerberg and reported that the deal followed months of talks and prior ties between Meta and Scale, including Meta’s earlier investments and use of Scale’s data-labeling services.
The Meta memo that announced Meta Superintelligence Labs lists a roster of recent hires and said the new unit will house Meta’s foundation-model and product teams. The memo, published by NBC/CNBC, framed the effort as a concentrated push to develop next-generation models and “personal superintelligence for everyone.”
Alexandr Wang’s move to Meta is the central human element of the deal: he appears in company statements as a named leader of Meta’s superintelligence effort and as a board member at Scale while the startup remains an independent company, according to TechCrunch and Fortune.
Why it matters: industry coverage says Meta’s investment and hires reflect an aggressive bid to close the gap with rival labs such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind, and to concentrate talent into a smaller, “talent-dense” core working on frontier models, Fortune reported.
