Indiana state employees will receive a one-time bonus of up to $2,500 in their July 29 paycheck, Governor Mike Braun announced July 13, crediting stronger fiscal discipline and cost-reduction efforts across state government.
The bonus varies by tenure: full-time employees hired before January 13, 2025, when Braun took office, will receive $2,500; those hired between January 14 and July 1, 2025, get $2,000; those hired between July 2 and December 31, 2025, receive $1,000; and employees hired during 2026 receive nothing. Part-time employees get half of these amounts, according to Indiana Capital Chronicle.
“Since taking office, I have directed my cabinet secretaries and agency leadership teams to review operations, identify efficiencies, reduce unnecessary costs, and run state government with a more business-minded approach,” Braun said in a statement to employees. “Thanks to those efforts, we are now seeing meaningful results, and I want you to share in that progress.”
The bonus will cost about $80 million from the state budget, according to Indiana Capital Chronicle. Indiana currently has about 30,756 state employees, down from 32,100 when Braun took office in January 2025.
The announcement comes as Indiana’s fiscal position has strengthened dramatically. The state ended its 2026 fiscal year with a $1.86 billion surplus and $3.99 billion in reserves, according to reporting from WISH-TV. Projections released in December 2025 showed the state could accumulate nearly $5 billion in surplus by mid-2027, according to Indiana Capital Chronicle.
Despite the strong fiscal position, the contingency fund that typically covers salary adjustments was reduced by 90% in the current state budget, meaning employees won’t receive ongoing pay raises. This pattern mirrors the approach taken by former Governor Eric Holcomb, who also issued a one-time bonus to state employees in December 2024 instead of permanent salary increases.
