Social Security launches automatic enrollment for newborns in Trump Accounts

The Social Security Administration announced on July 3 that it is launching automatic enrollment processes for newborns in Trump Accounts, integrating the new investment program into the existing hospital birth registration system to streamline access from the day a child is born.

The enrollment will be embedded into the Enumeration at Birth (EAB) program, which allows parents at hospitals, birthing centers, and with licensed midwives to request Social Security numbers for newborns. Social Security will update guidance to hospitals and assist states in modifying existing hospital forms to include automatic creation of a Trump Account during the Social Security number application process.

“Trump Accounts represent one of the most significant investments in the next generation of Americans in our nation’s history, providing American children with a strong financial footing for the future,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano. “Social Security numbers are the backbone of Trump Accounts, and we will empower parents to enroll their newborns through the Enumeration at Birth program to take full advantage of this program from the day a child is born.”

Trump Accounts can be established for newborns and children who have a valid Social Security number until they reach age 18. Eligible children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, receive a one-time $1,000 contribution from the U.S. Treasury, with contributions beginning on July 4, 2026.

The integration into the hospital birth registration process represents a significant shift in how the accounts are accessed. Previously, parents had to manually complete IRS Form 4547 and visit TrumpAccounts.gov to open an account. By embedding enrollment into the Enumeration at Birth program, the Social Security Administration aims to ensure that newborns can benefit from the accounts automatically, without requiring additional steps from parents.

Future Social Security card mailers for newborns will also include information about Trump Accounts and convenient ways to open an account. The Social Security Administration will update its webpages and publications with enrollment details and work with external partners to disseminate information about the program.

Six million children had already been enrolled in Trump Accounts as of the announcement, despite the enrollment process requiring manual registration. The automatic enrollment through hospitals is expected to significantly expand participation, particularly among lower-income families who might not have accessed the program through online registration alone.
