Lindsey Graham dies at 71 after brief illness, days after Ukraine visit

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina died on the evening of July 11, 2026, after a brief and sudden illness, his office announced. He was 71.

Graham, a Republican who represented South Carolina in the Senate since 2003, had been a fixture in Republican politics both in his state and in Washington. A staunch ally of President Donald Trump, he was on his way to clinching his fifth term in office after winning his state’s June primary election.

Just one day before his death, Graham had been in Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as part of a NATO Summit in Ankara. During the visit on July 10, Graham discussed Russia sanctions legislation and praised the determination of the Ukrainian military. He had told reporters that he had reached an agreement with the White House on a version of the Russia sanctions bill that the administration would support.

Graham’s office released a statement saying, “On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness. Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.” No specific cause of death was disclosed.

Graham first won election to the Senate in 2002, succeeding longtime South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond. Over his 23 years in office, he became one of the Senate’s most vocal voices on foreign policy and national defense, and was known for his bipartisan work on legislation. He had also run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.
