Social Security launches Trump Account enrollment for newborns starting July 4

Social Security launched an enrollment process on July 4, 2026, to help parents register newborns in Trump Accounts directly at hospitals, expanding access to investment accounts that provide a one-time $1,000 federal contribution to eligible children.

The Social Security Administration announced on July 3 that it would begin updating guidance to hospitals and working with states to modify existing birth registration forms. Starting the following week, hospital Enumeration at Birth forms—used when parents apply for Social Security numbers for newborns—would include “the automatic creation of a Trump Account,” according to the SSA press release.

“Trump Accounts represent one of the most significant investments in the next generation of Americans in our nation’s history, providing American children with a strong financial footing for the future,” said SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano. “We will empower parents to enroll their newborns through the Enumeration at Birth program to take full advantage of this program from the day a child is born.”

The move streamlines enrollment for newborns born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, who are eligible for the one-time $1,000 government deposit. According to the SSA, six million children have already been enrolled in Trump Accounts to date, with approximately 1.4 million of those qualifying for the $1,000 seed contribution.

Trump Accounts are tax-advantaged savings and investment accounts created by the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, signed into law by President Trump on July 4, 2025. The accounts are held in the child’s name, with a parent or guardian serving as custodian until the child reaches age 18. Any child under 18 with a valid Social Security number can open an account, though only those born during the 2025-2028 window receive the federal contribution.

Future Social Security card mailers for newborns will also include information about Trump Accounts and enrollment options. The SSA said it would update its webpages and work with external partners and stakeholders to disseminate information about the program. Parents who do not enroll through hospitals can still open accounts manually by completing IRS Form 4547 or using the Trump Accounts app.

On July 4, 2026, children with eligible Trump Accounts began receiving the initial $1,000 contribution from the U.S. Treasury. By early July, President Trump noted that over 500,000 children had received their first deposits.
