The Social Security Administration launched a first-of-its-kind commemorative Social Security card program on July 1, announcing that millions of newborns born between July 2 and December 31, 2026, will receive limited-edition cards bearing the Freedom 250 logo to mark America’s 250th anniversary of independence.
The commemorative cards are identical in function to standard Social Security cards but feature the official Freedom 250 logo in black ink. They will be issued through the agency’s Enumeration at Birth (EAB) program, which allows parents at hospitals, birthing centers, and licensed midwives to request a Social Security number during the birth registration process.
“Freedom 250 is a celebration of America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago,” said Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano in the SSA announcement. “The next generation of Americans born during this historic year will receive limited-edition Social Security cards bearing the Freedom 250 logo.”
The commemorative designation is exclusive to original cards issued through the EAB program during the qualifying six-month window. Replacement and duplicate cards, as well as EAB cards issued outside the July 2 to December 31 timeframe, will not carry the Freedom 250 design regardless of the cardholder’s birth date.
The SSA has issued Social Security numbers to newborns since 1987 through the EAB program, a partnership with hospitals and state vital records offices. According to the agency, more than 3.5 million children are born in the United States each year, and the commemorative cards will be produced at no additional cost to families or taxpayers.
The SSA emphasized that no special application or registration is needed beyond what parents already provide through the standard EAB process. The agency warned that scammers may attempt to exploit the program, noting that SSA will never call, text, or email requesting payment for a commemorative card. Parents who receive suspicious communications claiming to be from SSA should report them to the Office of the Inspector General at oig.ssa.gov/report or call 1-800-269-0271.
