Trump approval rating falls to 34%, matching second-term low

President Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 34%, matching the second-term low documented in recent polling and reflecting deepening public dissatisfaction with his handling of the economy and foreign policy.

The YouGov/Economist poll conducted May 22-26 found Trump’s job approval at 34%, the lowest level recorded in that survey across both of his terms in office, according to The Hill. Pew Research Center confirmed the same 34% figure in its April 20-26 survey of 5,103 U.S. adults, marking what the center described as “the lowest mark of his second term.”

With 59% of respondents disapproving, Trump’s net approval rating stands at negative 26 percentage points—another record low, according to YouGov data. The decline spans the political spectrum: his net approval among Republicans fell to 61%, down 30 points since January 2025, while independents rate him at negative 44%.

Economic concerns are the primary driver of the decline. Approximately 63% of respondents in the YouGov poll said the economy is getting worse, compared with just 13% saying it’s getting better. Pew found that 43% of Americans say they and their families are worse off financially than a year ago, the highest level since 2024, while only 10% report being better off.

Trump’s approval on specific issues has eroded significantly. His confidence rating on immigration policy fell to 41%, down from 46% in August 2025, according to Pew. Confidence in his use of military force dropped to 38%, down from 46% last summer. On inflation specifically, multiple polls show record disapproval: CNN reported his approval on the economy at 30%, while a Reuters/Ipsos poll found just 25% approve of how he’s handling inflation and prices.

Among Trump’s 2024 voters, approval has declined from 95% in the early days of his term to 78% as of late April 2026, according to Pew. The steepest drops have come from younger and Hispanic supporters: 57% of Trump voters under 35 now approve, compared with 87% of those 50 and older, while Hispanic Trump voters dropped to 66% approval from a higher baseline earlier in the term.

A majority of Americans—56%—now say the overall level of ethics and honesty in the federal government has fallen during Trump’s term, according to Pew. This represents a shift from early in his second term, when 47% expected ethics to decline and 31% thought they would rise.
