Dow Jones stock market futures declined 0.3% early on June 22, 2026, as investors braced for fresh inflation data and monitored escalating Middle East tensions that could further pressure prices.
Energy markets climbed with instability driving oil higher, according to reports from the overnight session. Escalating Middle East tensions have driven oil prices higher, sparking fresh concerns about a resurgence of inflationary pressures, as traders worry that renewed hostilities could disrupt global energy supplies.
The tension between the U.S. and Iran has created a dual challenge for markets. When Middle East fighting hits stocks, it tends to drive up oil futures, which then feeds into inflation concerns. In May, the Consumer Price Index increased 4.2% annually, the largest gain since April 2023, according to the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. That reading came on the heels of renewed Middle East fighting that had driven oil prices higher.
Investors are waiting for the next inflation data point. The Consumer Price Index for June is scheduled to be released on July 14, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. ET. Markets have already priced in elevated expectations for that report, with core CPI forecast to rise 0.30% in June after rising 0.10% in May. The year-over-year figure is forecast to rise 2.6% in June after rising 2.4% in May, according to Morningstar.
The connection between geopolitical risk and inflation isn’t new. When comparable Middle East conflict occurred earlier in 2026, the bond market struggled to price in the twin threats of higher inflation and slower economic growth. Rising geopolitical risk has historically created market volatility as investors attempt to balance the risk of stagflation—the combination of higher prices and slower growth—against potential near-term relief if tensions ease.
