Rep. Ilhan Omar won Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District Democratic primary on August 11 with over 80% of the vote, securing her party’s nomination for another term in the House. Omar captured 80.71% of the vote and more than 122,000 ballots, defeating four challengers: Julie Le, Latonya Reeves, Nate Schluter, and Abena McKenzie.
The commanding victory marks a sharp reversal from Omar’s recent primary history. In 2022, she narrowly survived a challenge from centrist former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels, winning by just 2 percentage points. In 2024, she faced Samuels again and expanded her margin to 13 points, winning 56.2% to his 42.9%.
The 2026 primary showed Omar consolidating support across the district. She received the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party endorsement in June, backing from House Democratic leadership, and ran unopposed by any major centrist challenger who had previously threatened her seat.
Omar, a member of the progressive “Squad” of House Democrats, has represented the Minneapolis-based 5th District since her 2018 election. The district is safely Democratic, and her primary victory clears the path to another term. Her commanding performance stands in contrast to other Squad members’ recent struggles: Reps. Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman both lost their primaries in recent election cycles to challengers who criticized their records.
