Nick Luna will become Vice President JD Vance’s chief of staff, replacing longtime aide Jacob Reses atop the operation, according to Punchbowl News on June 16, 2026.
Luna, a well-known figure in President Donald Trump’s orbit, currently serves as assistant to the president and deputy chief of staff for strategic implementation. He worked for Trump early in the current administration after serving as director of Oval Office operations during Trump’s first term, according to Punchbowl News.
Reses has held the chief of staff position since Vance took office in January 2025. He previously served as Vance’s chief of staff when Vance was a U.S. senator. Reses is set to formally leave his role by the end of summer, according to NBC News and Fox News reporting from June 11, 2026.
Luna brings what sources describe as a sharp political mind to the role, according to Punchbowl News. His appointment comes as Vance gears up for a potential 2028 presidential bid. Vance is currently on a book publicity tour.
Luna’s background in the Trump orbit spans multiple roles. In Trump’s first administration, he served as assistant to the president and director of Oval Office operations. Outside government, he has consulted for FIFA, according to Punchbowl News. During Trump’s second term, Luna has held the deputy chief of staff position focused on strategic implementation since January 2025.
