Trump’s approval rating hits second-term low in NBC poll

President Donald Trump’s approval rating hit 39% among all U.S. adults in a new NBC News poll released June 14, marking the lowest point of his second term, according to the survey conducted May 29 to June 7. Among registered voters, Trump’s approval stood at 42%, also a second-term low for NBC News polling.

The poll, which surveyed 2,400 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points, found that Trump’s sagging approval numbers weigh heavily on Republicans ahead of November’s midterm elections. Democrats hold a 5-point advantage on the generic ballot, with 49% of registered voters saying they prefer Democratic control of Congress versus 44% favoring Republican control.

Trump’s decline extends to rural voters, who powered his victories in 2016 and 2024. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted June 3-8 found his approval among rural Americans fell to 50%, down from 60% in February 2025, the month after his second-term inauguration. That drop stems from rural voters’ disapproval of his handling of the economy and rising costs, according to Reuters.

The president continues to struggle with independent voters, with two-thirds disapproving of his job performance. Younger voters and Latino voters—groups that shifted toward Trump in 2024—have soured sharply on him. Among voters aged 18 to 29, 77% disapprove compared to 21% who approve. Among Latino voters, 64% disapprove and 34% approve, according to the NBC poll.

The erosion in Trump’s approval coincides with mounting economic pressures facing Americans. Voters cite surging gas and grocery prices as key concerns, partly driven by the Iran war, which Trump announced was coming to an end on June 14. A YouGov poll released June 9 found a record 63% of Americans disapprove of how Trump is handling the economy. Multiple sources attribute the approval decline to voter concerns about inflation, the cost of living, and the unpopular war with Iran.

Republican support for Trump has also declined since March, when 88% of Republicans approved of his presidency. In the new NBC poll, 82% of Republicans approve, and 58% say they “strongly” approve—down from 63% in March. Despite the erosion, the GOP base remains largely loyal to the president.

Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducted the NBC survey with Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt, offered perspective on the numbers. “These are rocky numbers for Republicans, but they are not catastrophic,” McInturff said, noting that Democrats held larger advantages in recent “blue wave” years like 2018.
