To register to vote in the US, visit Vote.gov to start an online registration for your state — the site lists state-specific deadlines and options for online, mail and in-person registration.
Vote.gov is the official U.S. government portal for voter registration and directs users to state pages where you can complete or update a registration and find local election office contact details.
If you prefer mail, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission publishes the National Mail Voter Registration Form, which “can be used to register to vote, to update registration information” and is accepted by most states for federal elections.
Deadlines and ID requirements differ by state: Vote.gov notes that “voter registration deadlines vary by state and territory,” so check your state’s page for the exact last day to register, acceptable ID, and whether online registration is offered.
Common ways to register are online through your state’s portal (where available), by mailing the federal mail form to your local election office, or in person at designated government agencies such as motor vehicle departments or county election offices.
If you don’t receive confirmation within about 30 days of mailing a form, contact your local election office — many state election sites and county registrars publish phone numbers and office addresses on their Vote.gov pages.
For help in multiple languages or accessible formats, the EAC and U.S. Vote Foundation provide non-English and accessible versions of the federal form; the National Voter Registration Act also requires certain public agencies to offer registration opportunities.
