Margo Martin, a longtime Trump communications aide, has emerged as one of several candidates being considered to replace Karoline Leavitt as White House press secretary, after Trump publicly named her alongside other potential successors in late August.
Leavitt announced on August 12, 2026, that she would step down from the press secretary role at the end of the month. On August 21, Trump said he had received “so many job applications” for the position and specifically floated Martin, along with political commentator Scott Jennings, as possible replacements.
Martin, 30, currently serves as special assistant to the president and communications advisor. She has worked in Trump’s communications operation since 2019, when she began as a White House press assistant during his first administration. She later served as deputy communications director from 2021 to 2025 before returning to the White House in January 2025 as part of Trump’s second term.
Martin has become known for creating behind-the-scenes content and social media material from inside the White House, with her videos reaching millions of viewers. She has been described as a central force behind the administration’s quick-response social media strategy.
However, communications strategist Amore Philips warned against the promotion. Philips, a strategist at Apples & Oranges Public Relations, told The Mirror US that while Martin is “a genuinely skilled loyalist and an effective surrogate,” she lacks the specific credentials needed for the press secretary role. “The podium isn’t a loyalty test,” Philips said. “It’s a credibility test, performed live, five days a week, in front of a room whose entire job is to find the seams.”
Philips cautioned that promoting Martin could create structural problems for the administration. “Replacing your press secretary with your behind-the-scenes content creator would generate a crisis,” she explained, noting that “a press secretary’s job is to absorb scrutiny and redirect it back to the message.” If Martin held the role, “the core risk is that the spokesperson becomes the story,” according to Philips.
Betting markets reflected Martin’s candidacy but suggested she faced significant competition. As of August 26, Scott Jennings led the prediction markets at 30%, followed by Anna Kelly at 17%, with Martin at 11%, according to political betting platform Kalshi.
Trump has indicated he is in no rush to make a final decision. According to NBC News, Trump expressed that he “genuinely doesn’t know who to pick” and had shown “zero urgency” about naming a successor, despite Leavitt’s departure being imminent. Leavitt completed her final day as press secretary on August 27, 2026, after serving as the youngest person ever to hold the position.
Leavitt announced plans to join Trump’s MAGA Inc. super PAC following her departure, marking a shift from her White House role. Her tenure as press secretary, which began in January 2025, was marked by combative interactions with reporters and was described as history-making.
