Social Security 2027 COLA projected at 3.6%, largest boost since 2023

Social Security recipients are projected to receive a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment in 2027, marking the largest increase since the historic 8.7% boost in 2023, according to estimates from the Senior Citizens League.

The projection is based on current inflation data tracked through the Consumer Price Index for Wage and Salary Workers (CPI-W), which the Social Security Administration uses to calculate annual COLA adjustments. A 3.6% increase would raise the average Social Security benefit by approximately $70 per month, bringing it to around $2,007 for a typical retiree.

The COLA is calculated by comparing the average CPI-W for July, August, and September of the prior year with the same three months of the current year. This methodology means the final 2027 figure remains subject to change as inflation data continues to be released through September 2026. The official announcement is scheduled for October 14, 2026.

The 3.6% estimate represents a significant step up from recent years. The 2026 COLA was 2.8%, while 2025 saw only a 2.5% adjustment. The 2024 increase was 3.2%, following the exceptional 2023 surge driven by post-pandemic inflation. The Senior Citizens League’s projection places the 2027 adjustment well above the decade-long average of roughly 3.1% but substantially below the 5.9% adjustment implemented in 2022.

If the 3.6% projection holds, it would address concerns raised by senior advocacy groups about whether annual adjustments adequately protect retirees’ purchasing power. Research from the Senior Citizens League indicates that Social Security benefits have lost an estimated 13.7% of their buying power since 2016 when accounting for actual inflation experienced by older Americans, though official COLAs have totaled 32.3% over the same period.

The 2027 increase would also coincide with other Social Security 2027 changes including higher earnings limits and credit updates. Additionally, the average Social Security benefit currently sits at $2,080 per month in 2026, providing context for how the projected 3.6% increase translates to real dollars for the roughly 71 million beneficiaries who receive Social Security.

Estimates from multiple sources suggest the final 2027 COLA could range from 3.4% to 3.8%, depending on inflation readings in the remaining months of 2026. Some analysts projected earlier in the year that the adjustment could reach as high as 3.8% or 4.7%, but those estimates have moderated as inflation data has cooled. The official 2027 COLA announcement is scheduled for October 14, when the Social Security Administration will release the final figure.
