Monterrey beats Chicago Fire 2-1 in Leagues Cup quarterfinal, advances to semifinals

Monterrey FC advanced to the Leagues Cup semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Chicago Fire on Tuesday night at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois, eliminating the MLS side from the tournament in the quarterfinals.

Víctor Guzmán gave Monterrey the lead in the 45th minute of stoppage time with a header off an assist from Gerardo Arteaga. Chicago equalized in the 59th minute when Philip Zinckernagel scored, but Orbelín Pineda restored Monterrey’s advantage in the 83rd minute to secure the win.

A soccer stadium filled with fans under bright floodlights, a ball suspended mid-air above the pitch during an intense moment of play, goal net visible in sharp focus, crowd emotion visible in the background.

The match was a reversal of fortune for Chicago, which had compiled a perfect 3-0 record during Phase One of the tournament, earning all nine available points with victories over Club Necaxa, Santos Laguna, and Cruz Azul. Monterrey, by contrast, opened Phase One with a 2-1 loss to Orlando City but recovered with consecutive 2-1 victories over Inter Miami and Nashville SC to advance as one of the tournament’s eight quarterfinalists.

Monterrey’s path through the group stage demonstrated resilience. After falling behind early, the Liga MX side secured its quarterfinal berth on the goals-scored tiebreaker, finishing level with Cruz Azul on points and goal differential but advancing on a higher goal count, according to MLS Soccer.

A soccer field with goal nets visible, Monterrey team colors prominent in the composition, players in formation on the pitch during a match moment, intensity and focus captured in the scene.

With the victory, Monterrey will face one of the three other quarterfinal winners in the Leagues Cup semifinals on September 1 or 2. The tournament concludes with the third-place match and final both scheduled for September 6.
