Social Security 2027 COLA estimate drops to 3.6% as inflation cools

Social Security’s 2027 cost-of-living adjustment is estimated at 3.6%, down from earlier projections of 3.8% as inflation continues to cool, according to the Senior Citizens League and other analysts tracking the latest economic data released in August.

The estimate reflects July’s Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which showed inflation at 3.4% year-over-year, down from 3.5% in June. The COLA is calculated by comparing the average CPI-W from the third quarter of the previous year to the third quarter of the current year, making monthly inflation data crucial to the final figure.

A 3.6% increase would raise the average monthly Social Security benefit by approximately $70 to $75, bringing it from roughly $1,937 to about $2,007, according to recent analyses. This would mark the highest COLA in four years, despite the downward revision from earlier summer estimates.

The COLA mechanism has shown a clear pattern as inflation has moderated over the past three years. The 2026 COLA, which took effect in January, was 2.8%, following a 2.5% adjustment for 2025 and a 3.2% adjustment for 2024. The cooling inflation trend reflects the Federal Reserve’s efforts to bring price growth back toward its 2% target after elevated inflation in 2021 and 2022.

The official 2027 COLA will be announced on October 14, 2026, when the Social Security Administration releases the final calculation based on September’s inflation data. Until then, projections from the Senior Citizens League, AARP, and other analysts will continue to shift as new monthly CPI-W figures arrive. The August 2026 CPI report is scheduled for release on September 11, which will provide the next update to COLA estimates before the official announcement.

The Social Security trust fund faces separate challenges, with projections showing potential depletion in late 2032 if Congress does not act on funding reforms. The COLA increase itself does not affect the solvency timeline but reflects the real-world cost pressures that beneficiaries face each year.
