SpaceX will attempt to catch the Starship upper stage with its launch tower mechanical arms “in a few months,” Elon Musk announced on August 20, pushing the milestone beyond the late-August target the company had previously flagged.
The delay marks a shift in timeline for what would be the first-ever tower catch of Starship’s upper stage, a feat the company has not yet achieved in its 13 integrated flight tests to date.

SpaceX has repeatedly succeeded in catching the Starship Super Heavy booster—the first stage—using the same “Mechazilla” tower system since October 2024, when the company achieved the feat on its first attempt during Flight 5. The booster, a 230-foot-tall vehicle, has been caught multiple times since, demonstrating the viability of the mid-air recovery concept.
Catching the upper stage, or Ship, presents a different challenge. The Ship is taller, lighter, and follows a different trajectory during its return to the launch pad. Previous Starship test flights have seen the upper stage attempt to land in the ocean, where it has either splashed down or been recovered at sea. Flight 13, launched on July 24, 2026, deployed 20 Starlink V3 satellites and ended with the Ship attempting a landing burn before experiencing a hard splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company had been preparing Flight 14 as a candidate for the first Ship catch attempt, with planning documents from early August pointing to a possible late-August launch window. That timeline has now extended to early September at the earliest, according to launch-tracking sources, with the actual catch attempt now planned for several months beyond that.
SpaceX’s recent operational tempo has included 100 total launches, demonstrating the company’s increased cadence. The Starship program continues to support SpaceX’s business growth, with Starlink V3 satellite deployment a key component of recent test flights.
