State Farm has begun sending $5 billion in dividend checks to 49 million auto insurance customers, marking the largest payout in the company’s 100-plus-year history. The distribution started in late summer 2026 and will continue over several months, with individual payments averaging about $100 per vehicle and ranging from 4% to 10% of what customers paid in premiums during 2025.
The dividend is possible due to State Farm Mutual’s stronger-than-expected underwriting performance in 2025, according to the company’s announcement. As a mutual insurance company — one owned by its policyholders rather than shareholders — State Farm is structured to return profits directly to customers in the form of dividends or rate reductions rather than distributing them to outside investors.

Customers who held an active personal auto insurance policy with State Farm at any point during 2025 are eligible for the payment. Each person’s individual dividend amount depends on the state where they live and the premiums they paid that year, with percentages varying by state. Qualifying customers are being notified through email or mail and can choose to receive their payment as a check or through digital transfer via the State Farm dividend payment portal.
This is not State Farm’s first dividend to auto customers. In 2021, the company distributed $1.9 billion to policyholders following strong underwriting results that year. The latest dividend is more than 2.6 times larger, reflecting both the company’s improved financial position and the scale of its customer base, which now spans more than 49 million vehicles.

State Farm emphasized that the dividend payments are retrospective and do not affect future auto insurance rates, which are determined separately based on expected future costs and current market trends. The company has also reduced auto insurance rates in 40 states by an average of 10 percent in recent months, saving customers an additional $4.6 billion annually. Jon Farney, State Farm Mutual’s President and CEO, stated that the company’s customer-first focus as a mutual insurer allows it to provide value directly to policyholders while maintaining the financial strength needed to fulfill future obligations.
Because the distribution spans more than 49 million vehicles across the entire country, the payment process will extend over several months. Customers with an email address on file with State Farm will receive notification from a dedicated dividend email address and can access a payment portal to select their preferred payment method. Those without an email on file will automatically receive a check by mail. State Farm has also set up a Dividend Customer Contact Center at 1-888-808-9532 for customers with questions about their specific payment or state-specific timelines.
