Henkel Corporation announced a voluntary recall of Schwarzkopf Professional Osis Grip mousse on August 11 after discovering a packaging defect that could cause pressurized cans to leak and explode. The recall affects 25 specific lots of the 6.76-ounce mousse sold across 12 states through 21 distributors, according to the FDA.
The affected states are Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington. The product was distributed to salons and sold at the retail level to individual consumers.
Henkel discovered the issue through one customer complaint and two salon reports. The company noted that bruising on a hand was reported by the customer, though no other injuries have been identified. The defect stems from a problem with how the can is sealed, which under pressure could allow the product to leak and create an explosion hazard.
Consumers who purchased the affected mousse are encouraged to return it to their place of purchase for a full refund. The company has set up a customer service line at 1-800-234-4672 (Monday–Thursday 6:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Pacific Time, Friday 6:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Pacific Time) to answer questions. Schwarzkopf Professional Osis Grip products with batch codes not listed in the recall are safe to use.
Hair care product recalls over packaging or chemical concerns are not uncommon. In December 2024, the FDA announced a recall of a hair spray brand in 12 states after the product was found to contain dichloromethane, a solvent linked to health risks. Earlier, in 2021, Procter & Gamble recalled 32 aerosol hair products from brands including Pantene and Herbal Essences after benzene, a known carcinogen, was detected in the formulations. That same year, Unilever recalled dry shampoo aerosol products over elevated benzene levels.
The Schwarzkopf mousse recall is part of Henkel’s broader portfolio, which includes well-known brands like Persil and Dial. The company, which has more than 7,000 employees across the U.S. and Canada, generated approximately 6.1 billion dollars in North American sales in 2025. Similar product safety issues in the aerosol and pressurized-container space have prompted multiple recalls across the beauty and personal care industry over the past several years, highlighting ongoing quality-control challenges in manufacturing.
