Social Security payments reach beneficiaries on August 12 for the first wave of August recipients, with checks distributed to those with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of the month, according to the Social Security Administration’s payment schedule.
The Social Security Administration distributes payments based on beneficiaries’ birth dates, spreading distributions across three Wednesdays each month. Beneficiaries with birthdays from the 1st to the 10th receive payments on the second Wednesday; those born between the 11th and 20th get their checks on the third Wednesday; and recipients with birthdays from the 21st to the 31st receive payments on the fourth Wednesday.
This staggered schedule has been in place since the Social Security Administration implemented it for beneficiaries who filed claims on or after May 1, 1997. The system helps distribute the administrative workload of processing millions of monthly payments across the agency.

For August 2026, the full payment calendar includes Wednesday, August 19 for beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th, and Wednesday, August 26 for those born between the 21st and 31st. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients follow a different schedule, with payments typically distributed on the 1st of each month, adjusted if that date falls on a weekend.
Looking ahead to 2027, the Social Security Administration will announce the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) on October 14. According to The Senior Citizens League, a nonpartisan senior advocacy group, the 2027 COLA is forecast to increase by 3.8%, which would boost the average Social Security check for retired workers by approximately $73.62 per month. This would be 1.1 percentage points higher than the 2.8% increase beneficiaries received in 2026, which added about $56 monthly to payments.

If you do not receive your Social Security payment on the scheduled date, the SSA recommends waiting three additional business days before contacting your local Social Security office. The agency maintains detailed information about the 2027 COLA estimate, which will be finalized in October. For more information on Social Security payment schedules and COLA projections, beneficiaries can visit the Social Security Administration’s website or contact their local office.
