Social Security beneficiaries are projected to receive a 3.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027, boosting the average retiree’s monthly benefit by approximately $73 to $79, according to projections from the Senior Citizens League and independent analysts tracking inflation data.
The 3.8% increase represents a full percentage point jump from the 2.8% COLA that took effect in January 2026, reflecting inflation trends tracked through the third quarter of each year.
The Social Security COLA is calculated by comparing the average Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of the previous year to the same period in the current year. The Social Security Administration will announce the official 2027 COLA in October 2026, but current economic data has stabilized projections at 3.8% after earlier estimates climbed as high as 4.7% in the spring.

Recent COLA history shows significant variation tied to inflation cycles. In 2023, beneficiaries received an 8.7% increase, the largest in over 40 years, driven by record-high inflation. That was followed by more moderate adjustments: 3.2% in 2024 and 2.5% in 2025, as inflation cooled.
At 3.8%, the 2027 COLA would rank 17th among all adjustments since automatic COLAs began in 1975, according to the Senior Citizens League. If the projection holds, a retiree receiving the average monthly benefit of roughly $2,000 would see their check increase to approximately $2,076 to $2,079 per month starting in January 2027.

However, experts note that while the 3.8% increase is meaningful, it may not fully offset all of retirees’ actual expenses. Some analysis suggests that beneficiaries would need significantly larger increases to restore purchasing power lost to inflation over recent years. Additionally, any benefit increase can be partially offset by increases in Medicare Part B premiums, which are deducted directly from Social Security payments for most beneficiaries.
The projection remains subject to change. Inflation data released through September will finalize the 2027 COLA figure, which the Social Security Administration will officially announce in October 2026. Recent inflation reports showing July CPI easing to 3.4% have helped stabilize the estimate near 3.8% after months of uncertainty earlier in the year.
