Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced Saturday that she is freezing her eggs, sharing the deeply personal decision via Instagram livestream to an audience of 9.6 million followers and sparking a wave of hostile commentary from conservative critics. The New York Democrat, 36, said she had been saving up and weighing the decision for “a very long time,” and plans to document the process publicly to normalize conversations around fertility and reproductive choice.
Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week” the next morning, Ocasio-Cortez tied her decision to the current political landscape. “In this political environment where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy, I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations and share these processes, especially for working women across the country and normalize them,” she told host Jonathan Karl. In her Instagram announcement, she documented herself preparing to give herself a shot in the green room before the TV interview, saying, “I want you all to see that, because women can do anything.”
The announcement drew immediate backlash from the MAGA sphere on social media. One X user, calling himself “MAGA MAN,” wrote: “Another left wing childless moron rambling, these women sell their eggs to the highest bidder.” Another self-described conservative Christian and Trump supporter posted: “Oh so very sad for her. She needs to get married and have kids. Stop wasting time.” Other commenters characterized her decision as inappropriate or cited her age as a concern for a potential future child, while some invoked past remarks in which she suggested climate change could make having children unethical.
Katie Miller, the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and host of a weekly lifestyle podcast, broke from the conservative chorus to defend Ocasio-Cortez. On X, Miller wrote: “We have historically low birth rates worldwide. If one woman wants to preserve her right to have children, which means more than having none—we should celebrate that.” Miller, who welcomed her fourth child in June, continued: “More women should get married and have babies younger, but too many women buy into the feminist lie and spend their childbearing years climbing the career ladder. Everyone’s journey to motherhood is different, just as each of us mothers differently. I can’t wait to see how motherhood changes AOC.”
Even some political critics of Ocasio-Cortez pushed back against the attacks. One X user wrote: “I don’t agree with AOC on much but attacking her for freezing her eggs is pathetic. Whatever happened to live and let live?” Ocasio-Cortez herself acknowledged the stakes of her public disclosure, saying in her Instagram video, “Don’t be weird about this. Even though I know all of you will be.” The congresswoman, who is engaged to her longtime partner, has not ruled out a 2028 presidential or Senate run, and her reproductive decisions have become entangled with speculation about her political future.
