Democrat Rob Sand leads Republican Zach Lahn by 5 points in the Iowa governor’s race, according to a new Emerson College Polling/Nexstar Media survey conducted August 2-4, 2026. Sand holds 48 percent support among likely voters, while Lahn stands at 43 percent, with 7 percent undecided.
The poll marks a significant moment in Iowa’s open-seat gubernatorial race, where Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds’ decision not to seek reelection has created a competitive contest for the first time in nearly six decades. The general election is scheduled for November 3, 2026.
Sand’s strength with independent voters is a key factor in his lead. According to Emerson’s analysis, independent voters break for Sand by a 26-point margin, 58 percent to 32 percent, a significant advantage in a swing-heavy state. Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, noted that Sand performs better among these crucial voters, who favored Trump by about 17 points in Emerson’s 2024 final poll. About 1 in 10 Trump voters indicate they would support Sand, according to the survey.
Lahn, a businessman and farmer from Belle Plaine, emerged as the Republican nominee in June after defeating Rep. Randy Feenstra, whom President Donald Trump had endorsed. Lahn won the GOP primary with about 38 percent of the vote in a crowded field. Sand, the state auditor, ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and won his nomination with 99.7 percent of the vote.
The race reflects a broader competitive environment in Iowa. Multiple analysts, including Cook Political Report, Sabato’s Crystal Ball, and Pluribus, have rated the governor’s race as a toss-up. In July, the nonpartisan National Journal ranked Iowa as Democrats’ best pickup opportunity in the country for governor. Prediction markets give Sand a 69 percent probability of winning as of August 10.
Sand’s favorable rating stands at 51 percent in the Emerson poll, the highest among statewide candidates. Lahn’s favorable rating is 36 percent. President Trump’s approval rating in Iowa is 43 percent, with 51 percent disapproving, while Gov. Reynolds has a 44 percent approval rating with 47 percent disapproving.
The economy remains the top issue for Iowa voters at 38 percent, followed by healthcare at 19 percent, threats to democracy at 11 percent, education at 10 percent, and immigration and housing affordability at 6 percent each, according to the poll.
