Wisconsin State Fair opens today with America 250 Wheel

The Wisconsin State Fair opens today and brings with it the America 250 Wheel, a 230-foot-tall observation wheel making its Midwest debut as the largest portable Ferris wheel in the world. The fair runs through August 16 at Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis, celebrating the state’s 175th year of tradition and America’s 250th anniversary.

The America 250 Wheel, presented by Meijer, stands 75 feet taller than the fair’s previous WonderFair Wheel and towers over comparable attractions like Chicago’s Centennial Wheel at Navy Pier and the Texas Star Wheel at the State Fair of Texas. From the top, riders can see 14 miles in any direction while soaring through the air.

Each of the 45 gondolas seats six riders and is themed to represent one of the 45 U.S. Presidents, honoring the nation’s 250-year milestone. The ride averages 10 to 12 minutes per rotation, and tickets cost $7 per person when purchased on-site during the fair, though advance purchases before August 2 offered discounts.

The wheel weighs approximately 700,000 pounds and required four days to assemble on the fairgrounds. It is located on Main Street near Entrance C and has height requirements of 32 inches with a supervising companion or 42 inches to ride alone.
