IonQ completes $1.8B SkyWater acquisition, stock gains 9%

IonQ completed its $1.8 billion acquisition of SkyWater Technology on July 31, 2026, with the stock jumping 9% to $39.62 as investors responded to the deal closing. The quantum computing company acquired the U.S.-based semiconductor foundry to create what it describes as the only vertically integrated full-stack quantum platform.

Under the transaction terms, SkyWater shareholders received $15 in cash and 0.4883 shares of IonQ common stock for each SkyWater share. The deal had been announced in January 2026 and cleared its final regulatory approval on July 28.

The vertical integration gives IonQ control over its semiconductor supply chain, from chip design through fabrication and packaging. SkyWater operates as a subsidiary under its own name and will continue serving its existing semiconductor foundry customers while also supporting IonQ’s quantum computing roadmap.

The acquisition comes as IonQ is experiencing strong commercial momentum. On August 5, the company announced record second quarter 2026 revenue of $80.1 million, representing 287% year-over-year growth. IonQ raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to between $280 million and $290 million, up from its prior range of $260 million to $270 million.

According to IonQ’s earnings announcement, the company achieved this growth through record quantum computer deployments, with international, commercial, and multi-product segments accounting for approximately 50%, 60%, and 25% of the quarter’s revenue respectively. The company expects to achieve 100% organic growth for the full year 2026.

Niccolo de Masi, IonQ’s chairman and chief executive officer, said the acquisition accelerates the company’s fault-tolerant quantum computing roadmap while enabling it to serve as a merchant supplier across the quantum industry. SkyWater CEO Thomas Sonderman stated that joining IonQ marks a pivotal moment for the foundry as quantum computing shifts from research to manufacturing.
