An equipment issue disrupted power for approximately 30,000 CenterPoint Energy customers in the Katy area on August 5, with service restored within an hour, according to the utility company.
The outage began at around 9:45 a.m. when the equipment failure triggered a power loss across multiple neighborhoods in and around Katy. CenterPoint crews responded immediately, restoring power to all affected customers by 10:40 a.m., making the total outage duration roughly 55 minutes.
The hardest-hit ZIP codes were 77450, which experienced about 13,000 outages, followed by 77094 with approximately 10,000 outages, 77449 with about 3,500 outages, and 77494 with roughly 3,000 outages. All affected areas were concentrated in and around the Katy region west of Houston.
CenterPoint identified the root cause as a transmission issue in the local grid infrastructure. In a statement, the company acknowledged the disruption: “We understand how frustrating and disruptive any interruption in service can be for our customers, and we sincerely regret the inconvenience this outage may have caused.”
This incident is not the first time CenterPoint has experienced equipment-related outages affecting tens of thousands of customers. In December 2025, a similar incident during scheduled upgrade work also left approximately 30,000 customers without power after workers encountered equipment problems.
Despite occasional large-scale outages, CenterPoint has reported progress in reducing equipment failures across its system. According to the company, outage minutes attributed to equipment failure have dropped 57 percent since 2019 as the utility has continued replacing and upgrading aging infrastructure throughout its Greater Houston service territory.
