Shopify stock surged 21% following the company’s second-quarter 2026 earnings announcement on August 5, after delivering a revenue and profit beat that exceeded Wall Street expectations.
The Canadian e-commerce platform reported Q2 revenue of $3.58 billion, up 34% year over year, surpassing consensus estimates of roughly $3.43 billion. Operating income climbed to $488 million, up 68% from $291 million a year earlier, while free cash flow reached $654 million with an 18% margin.

Shopify’s President Harley Finkelstein highlighted the breadth of the quarter’s performance, stating in the earnings release that “more than 30% growth in GMV AND revenue AND gross profit AND free cash flow” marked strong execution across the business. Gross merchandise value, which measures total sales across the platform, grew 32% to $115.6 billion.
The company’s subscription solutions revenue reached $802 million, while merchant solutions revenue climbed to $2.78 billion. Gross profit expanded 31% to $1.71 billion, reflecting operating leverage as the company scales. Net income, excluding equity investment impacts, was $439 million.

Shopify’s stock reaction echoes a pattern from the prior year. In Q2 2025, the company’s stock similarly surged 21% after reporting revenue of $2.68 billion, which beat estimates of $2.55 billion, and adjusted earnings of 35 cents per share versus expectations of 29 cents. That earnings beat came alongside strong third-quarter guidance, a dynamic that repeated in 2026.
For Q3 2026, Shopify guided for revenue growth in the low-thirties percentage range year over year, with gross profit dollars expected to grow in the mid-to-high twenties percent range. The company also projected free cash flow margin in the high-teens to low-twenties range, signaling confidence in sustained profitability.
The results underscore how Shopify has managed macroeconomic headwinds. In the earnings release, Chief Financial Officer Jeff Hoffmeister noted that the company had “factored into our guidance some potential impact from tariffs, which did not materialize.” Shopify merchants have instead raised prices and maintained demand across all geographies and merchant sizes, he added.
