Alibaba unveils Qwen3.8-Max AI model with 2.4 trillion parameters

Alibaba unveiled Qwen3.8-Max, its largest artificial intelligence model to date, featuring 2.4 trillion parameters and a 1 million-token context window, marking a significant escalation in China’s competitive push toward frontier AI capabilities. The model became widely accessible on August 3, 2026, with open-source weights scheduled for release the following week.

Qwen3.8-Max is a multimodal foundation model that processes text, images, and video to enable complex, long-running tasks including autonomous coding, document analysis, and research workflows. According to Alibaba, the model ranks second on Vision Arena and fifth on Text Arena—two user-voted AI leaderboards—trailing only Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 in overall performance.

The model uses a sparse mixture-of-experts (MoE) architecture, activating only about 95 billion of its 2.4 trillion total parameters during inference—roughly 4 percent—to balance scale with computational efficiency, Alibaba said. The company also released QwenWork, a workplace AI agent platform combining coding, document analysis, audio and video generation, and website building capabilities, available through web and desktop applications.

Alibaba’s announcement comes just days after Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter multimodal model with a 1 million-token context window that launched July 16. The rapid succession of releases reflects intensifying competition among Chinese developers to narrow the gap with leading U.S. artificial intelligence labs. Moonshot’s Kimi K3 ranks third on Artificial Analysis’s leaderboard, behind Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol Max, while Alibaba’s earlier Qwen3.7-Max, released in May, trails both models.

Market reaction was immediate: Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares rose 6 percent to HK$124.00 on the announcement, according to reports, signaling investor confidence in the company’s AI trajectory. The stock’s gains reflect broader market interest in Chinese AI breakthroughs as the sector accelerates development of agentic systems and multimodal reasoning capabilities.

The model’s pricing reflects competitive positioning: Alibaba set input costs at $2.00 per 1 million tokens and output costs at $6.00 per 1 million tokens, with cached input reads at $0.25 per 1 million tokens. Developers can access Qwen3.8-Max through Alibaba Cloud’s Model Studio APIs and the newly launched QwenWork platform, making it available to global users immediately while the company finalizes open-source release logistics.

Alibaba’s decision to open-source the weights of a Max-class model marks a departure from recent strategy; the company kept several flagship releases proprietary earlier in 2026. The move signals confidence in the model’s capabilities and aligns with broader trends in Chinese AI development, where open-source releases have accelerated competition and adoption across the region. DeepSeek, another Chinese AI lab, similarly pursued an open-weights strategy that contributed to its rapid market penetration.
