The Federal Aviation Administration released its final Transition Plan for Unleaded Aviation Gasoline on Thursday, establishing a phased roadmap to eliminate leaded fuel from general aviation aircraft by the end of 2030, according to RTTNews. The plan fulfills a requirement of the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act and represents a collaborative effort involving aircraft manufacturers, fuel suppliers, airports, and pilots to safely integrate unleaded fuel into the piston-engine fleet.
The transition strategy employs four distinct phases, according to the FAA. Phase one focuses on fuel testing and authorization, with the FAA testing three different fuels at the William J Hughes Technical Center to address performance and compatibility questions. Phase two aims to gather market experience with unleaded alternatives. Phase three executes the national transition, targeting December 31, 2030, for the contiguous United States, while phase four addresses Alaska’s unique transition with an extended timeline through the end of 2032, according to AVWeb.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford stated in the RTTNews report that the transition represents “a positive step forward for general aviation community and people who live and work near general aviation airports,” emphasizing the collaborative nature of the effort across industry and government.
The plan builds on work already underway through the Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions initiative, known as EAGLE, a government-industry partnership launched in 2022. The FAA published a draft transition plan in January 2026 and incorporated public feedback from a 60-day comment period ending March 13, 2026, before releasing the final version. The agency will summarize the comments in a supplemental document to be published later in 2026.
Why Unleaded Fuel Matters for Public Health
The push to eliminate leaded aviation fuel stems from documented health risks. In October 2023, the EPA determined that lead emissions from piston-engine aircraft contribute to air pollution that endangers public health, particularly affecting children. Research cited by the MIT Aeronautics and Astronautics Laboratory found that children exposed to low levels of lead suffer neurological and cognitive impairment, including IQ loss. Studies have shown that children living within roughly 500 meters of airports using leaded avgas have significantly higher blood-lead levels.

Piston-engine aircraft have consumed approximately 38.6 billion gallons of leaded avgas in the United States since 1930, according to the Federal Register. Lead is a neurotoxin that enters the bloodstream when inhaled and can cause lasting brain damage. The transition to unleaded fuel represents the FAA’s largest single effort to reduce lead air emissions in the country.
The leading unleaded candidate is GAMI’s G100UL, a 100-octane unleaded fuel that received FAA approval via Supplemental Type Certificate in September 2022, according to the FAA. G100UL is certified for use in approximately 68 percent of piston-powered aircraft, though widespread distribution remains limited as of mid-2026. The FAA will update the transition plan after the first phase of testing is complete, allowing refinements based on real-world performance data.
