Michael Burry’s Substack newsletter “Cassandra Unchained” has reached 300,000 subscribers in just over seven months, fueling speculation that the “Big Short” investor could be generating as much as $113 million annually from the paid publication at its current $379-per-year subscription price.
Burry launched the newsletter in November 2025, days after closing his hedge fund Scion Asset Management to pursue what he described as greater freedom to share his investment analysis without regulatory constraints.

The rapid subscriber growth reflects Burry’s massive existing audience on X, where he has amassed 1.6 million followers who regularly parse his cryptic posts on market conditions and bubbles, according to CNBC.
The $113 million figure assumes all 300,000 subscribers are paying the full annual rate, which is a theoretical maximum. Substack takes a 10 percent commission on subscription revenue, leaving creators with 90 percent of the proceeds, according to multiple sources on the platform’s economics. In practice, Burry’s actual revenue would depend on the mix of free and paid subscribers, churn rates, and conversion dynamics.
Burry’s newsletter focuses on his increasingly bearish thesis on artificial intelligence and the broader technology sector, which he has compared to previous market manias. In his launch announcement, he drew parallels between today’s AI enthusiasm and the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s, as well as the housing bubble that preceded the 2008 financial crisis. He has been publicly short Nvidia and Palantir, the poster companies of the AI boom, and has argued that policymakers are ignoring warning signs.

Burry pointed to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s recent statements that AI companies “actually are profitable” and represent “a different thing” from past booms. Burry cast this as an echo of former Fed Chair Alan Greenspan’s 2005 assertion that U.S. housing prices showed no signs of a bubble—just two years before the subprime implosion validated Burry’s famous bet against the housing market.
The newsletter represents a significant shift in how Burry operates. He has emphasized that he is not retired and that “Cassandra Unchained” is now his “sole focus,” replacing the hedge fund business that made him famous. The decision to close Scion Asset Management came after years of underperformance relative to market indices, though Burry maintained a devoted following for his contrarian views on bubbles and market structure.
The Substack milestone also reflects broader trends in creator monetization. The platform has grown substantially, with an estimated 8.4 million paid subscriptions across all creators in the first quarter of 2026, representing a 68 percent jump from the prior year, according to reporting on Substack economics. However, Burry’s subscriber count and revenue potential remain exceptional, placing him among the highest-earning individual creators on the platform.
