Bruce Springsteen called the Trump administration a “ship of fools” during a PBS NewsHour special that aired over the July 4th weekend, renewing his ongoing criticism of the president’s policies and governance.
In “Bruce Springsteen: Finding America in Song,” which premiered July 5, 2026, and was hosted by PBS NewsHour’s Geoff Bennett, Springsteen described what he sees as an existential threat to American democracy. “I think we’re in a very dangerous moment,” he said. “Obviously, our democracy is threatened, the Constitution is threatened. We have an administration that, in my humble opinion, is a ship of fools. It’s a very, very, very dangerous time for America.”
The special, filmed at the newly opened Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music in Monmouth County, New Jersey, marked a milestone for the rock legend — the center’s opening coincided with the 250th anniversary of American independence. Despite his stark assessment of the current political moment, Springsteen expressed measured optimism about the nation’s future, drawing on historical perspective.
“I was old enough to live through the 60s, and I remember the assassinations of John Kennedy and Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and Bobby Kennedy,” he reflected. “So it’s not like these are the first difficult times America’s been through. We had the Civil War. America has 250 years of being grounded in democracy and I don’t think that’s going to change. I think we’re going through a very, very difficult period, but I tend to remain realistically optimistic that the country will pull out of it and something new will be born from it that is good.”
Springsteen has maintained a decades-long commitment to political activism through his music and public statements. His catalog spans from early protest songs like “Lost in the Flood” on his 1973 debut album to more recent works addressing contemporary crises. He wrote “Streets of Minneapolis” in response to deaths during immigration enforcement operations and has repeatedly called out what he describes as threats to constitutional governance. When announcing his 2026 “Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour” in the spring, he stated that his democracy, constitution, and rule of law were “being challenged right now as never before by a reckless, racist, incompetent, treasonous president and his ship of fools administration.”
The musician also articulated his understanding of patriotism during the special, distinguishing between uncritical nationalism and what he calls accountability. “I believe in critical patriotism,” he said. “I believe that’s the definition of a patriot, that you love your country so much that you are willing to look at it clearly, recognize its faults, encourage it to be a better place and believe that you carry in your heart the country that is waiting.”
Trump has responded to Springsteen’s criticism with hostility, calling for boycotts of his concerts and describing the musician as a “total loser who spews hate.” Despite the political divide, Springsteen told Bennett that he performs for audiences across the political spectrum. “If I’m playing up at the stadium here in Jersey and there’s 50,000 people, I don’t think they’re all Democrats or they’re all progressives. I like playing to a big tent,” he explained. “I’m in the hearts and minds business. You change people kind of one at a time.”
