Advanced Micro Devices stock surged 5% on July 20, 2026, after Microsoft announced an expanded strategic partnership to deploy AMD’s next-generation AI infrastructure across Azure. The agreement marks a significant milestone in the companies’ multi-year collaboration on cloud computing and artificial intelligence workloads.
Microsoft will deploy the AMD Helios Rackscale Solution at scale on Azure to power frontier model AI inference for the company, its AI customers, and Azure AI services, according to AMD’s press release issued earlier today. The Helios platform combines AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, AMD EPYC “Venice” CPUs, Pensando networking technology, and ROCm software in an integrated system built for large-scale AI training and inference.
Beyond the Helios deployment, Azure will add two new virtual machine series powered by 6th Generation AMD EPYC “Venice” processors. The Azure HDv2 will support agentic AI and data pipelines, while the Azure HXv2 will target semiconductor design workloads. AMD will also expand its deployment of Pensando data processing units (DPUs) to support Azure networking services and integrate with Azure Boost to improve cloud networking performance across Microsoft’s infrastructure.
AMD will begin shipping Helios to customers, including Microsoft, in the second half of 2026. “AMD and Microsoft have spent years building high-performance infrastructure together, and today we’re extending that partnership across the full stack of AMD AI solutions on Azure,” said Dr. Lisa Su, Chair and CEO of AMD, in the announcement.
This partnership builds on AMD’s growing dominance in the AI chip market. When AMD announced a comparable 6-gigawatt deal with Meta Platforms in February 2026, AMD stock rose between 7% and 8%, according to CNBC and other outlets covering the announcement. The Meta agreement, valued at over $100 billion, gave Meta a warrant to purchase up to 10% of AMD’s shares and included performance-based vesting tied to shipping milestones.
The Microsoft deal signals continued momentum for AMD as hyperscalers expand their AI infrastructure investments. Microsoft has committed $80 billion to AI data center expansion through 2028, positioning AMD as a critical partner alongside traditional chip suppliers. The partnership also demonstrates Microsoft’s strategy to diversify its AI chip supply beyond custom designs, incorporating AMD’s proven Instinct GPU and EPYC CPU platforms into its cloud offerings.
