Social Security payments go out July 22, 2026 to beneficiaries born on the 21st through the 31st of their birth month, according to the Social Security Administration’s official payment schedule. This date marks the fourth Wednesday of the month, when the agency distributes benefits to this group of recipients as part of its staggered payment system.
The payment you receive in July is for your June benefit, and it will arrive by direct deposit or Direct Express debit card on the scheduled date. The Social Security Administration adopted this birth-date-based staggered schedule in June 1997 to manage the growing volume of beneficiaries more efficiently.
Before 1997, all Social Security beneficiaries received payments on the 3rd of the month, according to AARP. As the program expanded, the SSA divided recipients into three groups based on their birth dates. If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th, you receive payments on the second Wednesday; between the 11th and 20th, on the third Wednesday; and between the 21st and 31st, on the fourth Wednesday. This system spreads payments throughout the month and reduces strain on the banking system.
There are exceptions to this birth-date rule. Beneficiaries who began receiving benefits before May 1997, those who live abroad, those enrolled in Medicare Savings Programs, and those receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are typically paid on the 3rd of the month. SSI recipients alone are paid on the 1st of the month, though in July they receive payments on both July 1 and July 31 because August 1 falls on a Saturday and the SSA does not make payments on weekends.
