Big Boy train schedule: World’s largest locomotive heads home July 29

Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, will arrive home in Cheyenne, Wyoming on July 29 after completing the eastern leg of its historic coast-to-coast tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

According to Union Pacific’s official schedule, the locomotive departs Denver at 9:00 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time on Wednesday, July 29, after a private employee event the previous day. It makes a brief stop in Greeley, Colorado, arriving at 1:15 p.m. and departing at 2:00 p.m., before continuing its journey west to Cheyenne, where it arrives at 4:00 p.m. with no public access.

The 133-foot-long, 1.2 million-pound locomotive has been on the rails since March 29, when it departed Cheyenne for California’s Roseville to begin the western leg of the tour. The journey marks the first full transcontinental tour in Big Boy’s storied history, combining both westbound and eastbound segments across the United States in a single year.

The eastern leg, which began in late May, took the locomotive through eight major cities and more than 50 whistle-stops across 10 states, including stops in Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania for the first time since the locomotive’s original operation era. Major display events occurred in Philadelphia on July 4 and 5, Altoona, Pennsylvania on July 9 and 10, and St. Louis, Missouri on July 19 and 22, where thousands of rail enthusiasts gathered to see the historic machine.

Union Pacific operates Big Boy No. 4014 from its Steam Shops in Cheyenne, where the locomotive will undergo maintenance and servicing before any future operations. Of the eight Big Boy locomotives ever built, No. 4014 remains the only one still in operation, making it a living connection to American railroad history and industrial achievement.
