The senator died just hours after returning from Kyiv, Ukraine, where he had met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on July 10 to discuss strengthening sanctions against Russia and military support for Ukraine. Graham visited a Ukrainian defense company drone production facility during the trip, according to Ukrainian media reports.
Graham was first elected to Congress in 1994 and moved to the Senate in 2002, when he succeeded long-serving Senator Strom Thurmond. He was running for reelection this year and had recently won the Republican primary. Throughout his Senate tenure, he became known as a strong advocate for U.S. military intervention abroad and a proponent of robust support for allied nations, particularly in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
