Costco taps AI to boost e-commerce, drives triple-digit traffic growth

Costco reported triple-digit growth in AI-sourced e-commerce traffic in its latest quarter, marking a significant milestone as the retailer taps artificial intelligence to strengthen its digital presence and drive member engagement through more relevant product discovery.

During its Q3 2026 earnings call in May, the warehouse club disclosed that AI-generated traffic now delivers the highest conversion rate among all its digital channels, according to executives and multiple financial outlets. While the volume of AI search-generated traffic remains relatively low compared to traditional channels, the early results highlight Costco’s success in positioning itself for a fast-growing digital channel as shoppers increasingly use AI tools to research and purchase products.

CFO Gary Millerchip explained Costco’s AI strategy centers on optimizing product pages to improve visibility in large language models and AI search platforms. “We have got a good value on appliances, a very good everyday value, but our real big value is in an all-in pricing,” he said during the call. “Our prices include delivery, installation, and haulaway. Regular search did not show all that value.” The same principle applies to tire services, where Costco bundles installation with pricing—an offering that traditional search engines failed to surface effectively.

Personalization Drives Nearly $500 Million in Digital Sales

Costco’s AI investments extend beyond search optimization. Personalized product recommendation carousels deployed on the e-commerce site contributed just under $500 million in digital sales during Q3 2026, according to Customer Experience Dive. These AI-powered recommendations delivered conversion rates three times better than Costco’s typical conversion rates, underscoring the financial impact of machine learning-driven personalization.

CEO Ron Vachris emphasized the company’s collaborative approach to AI development. “As we learn more about how consumers are embracing AI in their shopping habits, we are working with the leading AI companies to improve the visibility of our values to current and potential future Costco members,” he said. “We believe AI is changing how consumers research products, and has the potential to be a significant opportunity for Costco given our pricing authority and our focus on quality.”

Costco’s AI push arrives as the broader retail industry experiences explosive growth in traffic from AI sources. According to Adobe’s Digital Insights report from April 2026, AI referral traffic to U.S. retail sites surged 393% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026. Industry research shows that AI-referred traffic converts at significantly higher rates than traditional organic search—roughly 4 to 5 times more valuable per session, according to multiple e-commerce research firms. This pattern aligns with Costco’s experience, where AI traffic has emerged as the highest-converting channel.

The retailer’s cautious, value-focused approach to AI adoption contrasts with competitors that have pursued more aggressive or flashy AI rollouts. Costco’s strategy prioritizes solving concrete member problems—ensuring complex offers like bundled services and all-in pricing are discoverable by AI tools—rather than chasing headline-grabbing AI features. Vachris noted the company is “seeing great returns on the investments,” with sales gains offsetting the cost of AI infrastructure and development.
