Freedom 250 hijacked US’s 250th anniversary for partisan gain, House Democrats report says

House Democrats released a 55-page report on July 2 accusing Freedom 250 of hijacking the US’s 250th anniversary celebration for partisan gain and potential financial fraud. The report, titled “From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People out of their 250th Birthday,” alleges that Trump allies used the organization to divert funds away from America250, a bipartisan commission Congress created in 2016 to oversee the nation’s semiquincentennial.

Rep. Jared Huffman of California, the ranking Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, led the months-long investigation. “We put it all together to really tell the story of how Donald Trump hijacked what should have been a unifying national celebration and repurposed it for his own interests,” Huffman said in a statement, according to NPR.

The Donor Deception Allegations

The report’s most serious allegation involves the systematic misleading of donors. House Democrats claim that philanthropists who intended to support the bipartisan America250 were instead given Freedom 250’s banking information, meaning their contributions went to Trump’s organization instead.

According to the report, this deception potentially amounts to wire fraud. “Donors who intended to support America250 were misled and apparently provided with Freedom 250’s banking information, meaning contributions solicited in the name of the nation’s nonpartisan birthday foundation were routed instead to the President’s substitute entity,” the report states, per NPR. Freedom 250 disputed this in a statement to NPR, saying “every major sponsor received documentation identifying Freedom 250 as the recipient’s organization before funds were transferred, and donors were free to decline.”

The Funding Divide

Congress allocated $150 million in federal funds to the Interior Department for 250th anniversary celebrations, with the understanding that $100 million would support America250. However, America250 has received only $25 million, according to the Democratic report. Freedom 250, by contrast, emerged with significantly more visibility and federal funding, though exact figures differ across sources.

The report accuses Trump allies of diverting resources away from the congressionally chartered bipartisan commission. “Once you siphon off the funds and supplant the real bipartisan commission with this new entity and you declare it the main platform for our nation’s celebration, and you award all these shady contracts to your friends, you can do anything you want,” Huffman said, according to NPR.

Freedom 250 was created via executive order in January 2025 and incorporated as an LLC under the National Park Foundation, the nonprofit arm of the National Park Service, in October 2025. The organization describes itself as “the national, non-partisan organization leading the celebration of our Nation’s 250th birthday,” though Democrats argue it functions as a Trump-aligned shadow group.

The report also accuses Freedom 250 of funding its programming through opaque and questionable avenues, including soliciting foreign funds, selling access to the president, and awarding contracts to Trump operatives. Federal contracts have directed tens of millions of dollars to Event Strategies, Inc., a company that helped organize Trump’s January 6 rally, according to NPR.

Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez called the report’s claims “categorically false,” describing it as a “partisan smear.” The report has not been adopted by the Natural Resources Committee and does not reflect its official position. Republicans on the committee have declined to conduct oversight on the issue, according to reporting.

Huffman indicated the investigation will continue beyond July Fourth, particularly if Democrats gain control of the House in the fall midterm elections. He said his team faced “resistance and obstruction” from Freedom 250 throughout the months-long inquiry and called on the organization to open its books to congressional scrutiny.
