House Democrats allege Freedom 250 misled donors away from America250

House Democrats released a 55-page report on July 2, 2026, alleging that donors intending to support America250, a bipartisan commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, were misled into giving money to Freedom 250, a Trump-backed rival organization, according to the investigation by the House Natural Resources Committee.

The report, titled “From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People Out of Their 250th Birthday,” alleges that some donors received routing and account numbers for Freedom 250 instead of America250, diverting their contributions to the Trump-aligned group. “Some donors who intended to give money to America250, a bipartisan effort to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, were given routing and account numbers that directed their funds to Freedom 250,” according to The Washington Post’s reporting on the Democrats’ findings.

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-California), who oversaw the report, stated the investigation found evidence of potential fraud. “I’m a lawyer, and I know better than to pronounce that a crime has been committed,” Huffman said. “But I do know the elements of fraud, and there is evidence of all those elements here.”

America250 was established by Congress in 2016 as the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, a nonpartisan effort to coordinate celebrations for the nation’s 250th anniversary. Freedom 250, by contrast, was created by President Trump through executive order on January 29, 2025, and formally launched in December 2025 as a public-private partnership housed within the National Park Foundation.

The Democrats’ investigation alleges that Trump administration officials blocked some donors and sponsors from contributing to America250 by telling them they lacked a “green light” to do so. The report also claims administration officials pressured donors to redirect donations from the bipartisan effort to Freedom 250, with Freedom 250 conducting its own outreach to America250 sponsors. Some corporate executives did not understand the distinction between the two organizations, according to the report.

The report further alleges that Trump allies worked to shift public financial support away from America250, including $75 million of congressionally allocated funds that the bipartisan commission expected to receive. The report states the remaining funds are likely to be kept by the White House. This funding diversion created “significant headwinds” for America250’s programming, including grants, educational initiatives, and volunteer programs.

Freedom 250 denied the allegations. “This so-called ‘report’ is nothing more than a partisan smear from politicians who would rather manufacture division than celebrate America’s 250th birthday alongside the rest of the country,” Freedom 250 spokeswoman Danielle Alvarez said in a statement. She also disputed the specific claim about routing numbers, calling it “unequivocally false” that Freedom 250’s banking information was given in lieu of America250’s.

The Democrats’ investigation drew on confidential disclosures from sources, internal Freedom 250 documents, and sworn testimony from two committee hearings. The report also alleges Freedom 250 sold access to President Trump through sponsorship packages starting at $500,000 and climbing above $10 million, backed by a “historic photo opportunity” with the president. The report cites potential violations of federal and District of Columbia law, including wire fraud and charitable solicitation fraud.

Rep. Huffman indicated that if Democrats regain control of the House and obtain subpoena power, they will pursue broader investigations into Freedom 250. “If and when we have more tools at our disposal to do investigation and oversight, perhaps in the next Congress you will see a lot more information on this, I’m sure,” he said.
